About
If given a choice where would you be?
If I had a choice, I would spend every day at the beach… or hiking among the red rocks in Colorado—with my camera in my hand, of course. I realize that’s a stark difference, but that’s how I roll. I tend to go from one extreme to the next and often land somewhere right in the middle.
I fell in love with photography in the seventh grade. The first time I saw an image in a tray of developer literally appear right in front of my eyes, I was hooked. My first camera was a Pentax K1000. I’m pretty sure anyone from my generation who started in photography began with that film camera. I still have mine today and consider it one of my prized possessions.
After high school, I went to work full-time for the federal government. That’s what was expected back then—certainly not striking out on your own and running a business. I spent over 20 years working for the government before I was finally able to place that career in my rearview mirror and look ahead.
I then spent another ten years running Hilltop Graphics and Gifts, now Hilltop Signs and Graphics. Tom and I eventually sold the business to our son, Mike, and I—finally—after having several careers, raising two children to adulthood, maintaining our home, and serving as the social secretary for everyone, could follow my own passion.
Yes, my passion.
I absolutely love everything about photography, art, and anything creative. So much so that Tom has “lovingly” described me as expanding foam.
I’m an education junkie and can often be found taking week-long classes, participating in online groups, watching tutorials, or reading the latest I can find on new techniques for doing just about anything.
I’ve made a life decision to continue my education, no matter how much I’ve already learned. There is always something new to discover. I have earned my Master Photographer degree, my Photographic Craftsman degree, and my Certified Professional Photographer certification through Professional Photographers of America. I am currently pursuing my Master Artist degree. I also compete regularly, which helps me continue to learn and refine my skills.
